At the end of every kids martial arts practice we go over a proper handshake to promote good sportsmanship. I'm amazed at how many people I come into contact with that either give a lack luster grip or even over compensate squeeze all without establishing eye contact. A firm handshake, with eye contact, is way to set the stage for a first or lasting impression. The martial arts that we practice, Judo and Brazilian Jiujitsu, are full of contact and there is a contingent, especially after the lockdowns, to take away direct contact practices like handshakes. Physical contact is something older than trees, it is part of our nervous system, and is a major part of our non-verbal communication. It is here to stay. Might as well be good at it.
